How Does Evaporative Cooling Work?

Nature's most efficient means of cooling is through the evaporation of water. A simple example is the cooling you feel when stepping out of a swimming pool - the water evaporates quickly from your body, taking heat with it. Our coolers do essentially the same thing by drawing hot air through wet pads using a fan or blower. As water evaporates from the pads, it takes heat from the air with it, resulting in up to 30 degree cooler air being discharged from the cooler.

A swamp cooler or evaporative cooler is especially well suited for climates hot and dry climates, such as Colorado Springs CO. In less humid climates, the installation and operating cost of an evaporative cooler can be much lower than traditional refrigerative air conditioning.

Advantages of Swamp Coolers vs. Air Conditioning

  • Lower Installation Costs. Estimated cost for installation is 1/8 that of refrigerated air conditioning.
  • Energy Savings. Estimated cost of operation is 1/2 that of refrigerated air. Because the technology is simpler, an evaporative cooler costs about half as much as an air conditioner that will cool the same sized area.
  • Ease of Maintenance. The only two mechanical parts in most basic evaporative coolers are the fan motor and the water pump, both of which can be repaired for very little and often by a mechanically able homeowner. Evaporative coolers operate on 120-volt electricity, which means they don't need special high-amperage circuits like many air conditioners do. A swamp cooler can be plugged into a nearby outlet.
  • Less Ductwork. Evaporative cooling doesn't require as much ductwork as air conditioning. For a newly installed system, a short duct can direct the cooled air to a central point in the house. From there, air can be directed through the various rooms by simply opening and closing doors and windows to allow the cooled air to flow.
  • Moisturized Air. Evaporative cooling adds moisture to the air, which helps to keep wood furniture and fabrics from drying out.
